If Anyone Ever Thought Dorm Food Was Bad

What is This Slop?

If anyone ever thought dorm food was bad they haven’t eaten in our company mess hall in Vietnam. We had a lot of mystery food in the form of a stew-like consistency. It would actually splatter when that large spoon-like ladle served it to our tray. You would eat it or die of starvation. We would occasionally resort to eating C-rations. (the C is for combat). You could obtain these cartons of twelve individual boxes with four breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.

Green Eggs and Ham

I know where Dr. Seuss came up with his green eggs and ham. When you put nasty powdered eggs in a can mixed with small chunks of ham the eggs touching that ham turn green. True story! The cans of fruit were OK, as was the cheese whiz and crackers. Can you imagine this being gourmet? Well, we did, Interesting story; there was no expiration date on the can.
After my first thirty days, I transferred to the gunship platoon. This included more learning. Flying a gunship was akin to driving an eighteen-wheeler. The slicks were a sports car in comparison.
